Les travaux sur la maison sont définitivement terminés jusqu'au printemps. Le temps froid et les grosses bordées de neige nous ont un peu poussé la main: nous devrons remettre la fondation à plus tard. détails, RETOUR
The work is definitely done for the year. The cold weather and the amazingly deep snow have temporarily stayed or hand: the foundation will be going in later, it seems...details, HOME

We have closed the sale on the house, and have moved. We're now renting a house not ten minutes from Le Boise! It's fun, getting used to wood heat and electric baseboards when we were so used to forced air and just a thermostat on the wall! As for the construction, we have made many calls but the foundation isn't really moving. We have to patiently wait for the contractor to start work... someday...details, HOME

The project is taking a new direction: a "Paradigm Shift", the business-heads would call it. We've decided to pay for the project "out of pocket", and let construction move ahead as funds become available. It's a pretty big swing in our heading, but we feel confident it's for the best! details, HOME

Les, the farmer who is supplying our logs is also willing to lend us the parts to assemble a crane to move the logs around. His father, over a few cups of tea ;-), explained the basics of how to put the components together to make a crane similar to that which he used in a local mine for over fourty years! We have put our townhouse in Hull on the market, as we figure it will be much more convenient to live in Masham while we work on the construction. We've asked Claude to keep an eye out for a house for rent in the area. Our file with the Caisse Populaire and the SCHL is not advancing to our liking. Somebody, for some reason, is dragging their heels. details, HOME

Slash and burn, slash and burn. Our weekends were full of screaming chainsaws and woodsmoke... The house plans were pretty much finished. There were only a few small details to solidify. Both the house designer and the alternative energy consultant were coming to meet us "on site".details, HOME

We continued to "slash and burn" on the weekends. During the week, we would go "shopping" for incidentals. We kept track of the costs pretty well, in hopes of making a realistic budget. We met with the house designer many times, and exchanged many emails: The Plans Were Coming Together!details, HOME

Pretty much every weekend we went back up to Le Boisé, to enlarge the clearing that represented the future location of our house. Denise, Gaston, Fred, and Dominic were a great help. It was two-fold work: a few cut, and the others burned the brush.details, HOME

The Log Home Building Course is over. With my new knowledge, I begin construction on the most important structure on the construction site: The Outhouse! Meanwhile, meetings with the designer with our designs, photo ideas, lists, wishes, et cetera, to help him design our dream home! Not a small undertaking. Meanwhile, we had the septic survey done, and finalized the land purchase. It's done. It's ours, finally. As well, it will be paid off completely in five years. Where, we wonder, will the house be by then? It would be cool to be living there, and it is theoretically possible! details, HOME

I took four weeks off work to attend a Log Home Building Course in Carleton Place, Ontario. I learned the 'scribe log' style from a teacher that has been building them for more than thirty years now. The other students there attended from Japan, Germany, Switzerland, and the USA. At the same time, Josee read a million log home magazines, and took copious notes ;-).
The surveyor "located" the house site, as well as the weeping field site. It was a bit odd to "locate" the house, since we don't even know what it's going to look like!!
And all month, we exchanged emails and faxes with the sellers and the agents, getting the land deal moving forward. details, HOME

Things are finally speeding up! We found a rare pearl, indeed, in a parcel of land that is perfect for us, and we are in the process of finalizing the purchase. It doesn't exactly match our list of requirements, but it is perfect. After looking at a few options, we have decided to build the house ourselves. And here's the kicker: it will be a log house, hand-made, with a power plant on-site!
To get some skills, I've signed up for a Log Home Building Course, starting in April. It's finally coming together! details, HOME
It was February, the heart of the "Winter Doldrums", when we decided to act on our desire to leave the city behind, and become "country folk". We always knew our townhome was a "transitional" home, and had no thoughts of growing old there. With Josee's mother's wholehearted assistance, we started our search. We thought a "logical approach" was the way to go, and we composed lists (necessities, wishes, travel distances, property price ranges and types) and went to look around. It was an approach, while intelligent and well thought-out, didn't last very long! details, HOME
