And now we lay down the chisels and the saws, the hammers and the log dogs, and patiently wait for spring to come.
It wasn't really that it was too cold, but that it was getting treacherous to walk on the logs and the subfloor with the layer of ice that it often had.
So, we patiently wait for spring to come, much like many of the other wild critters on LeBoise, the bears, the assorted rodentia. details, HOME

Well, that's pretty much it for the year. I've hung up the bow and the various fire-sticks, and will leave the critters alone for the rest of the year. The weather is starting to get messy, just as well.
We also bought a GPS so that we can accurately determine the boundary of our land and that of our southern neighbor, Bernard. Understandably, Bernard is anxious for as much land as he can have, and wants to know where the exact line is, so we went out and with two GPS Garmin12 units, traced it from one end, pretty much to the other. The ages old surveyor's ribbons are pretty much where they should be, but a casualty of our new accuracy is a spot we call "The Garden", a small clearing that we thought was ours, but is in fact bisected by the line.
We did one last log, scribing in the ice and rain, in the cold, but we're done of that, too, now, it seems. details, HOME

It gets cold quick this time of the year, and a few different things have conspired against us working on the house. I had a business trip to Boston, which killed a week of construction, and then the weather also quite often conspired against us; the rain freezes when it hits the logs, making them treacherous to work on. We tried to set up a tarp "tent" over the worksite, to allow us to work in comfort.

Well, a man's gotta have his priorities. Hunting season has arrived, so the construction season has been, ahem, scaled back. This may well be the last season that this happens, though, happily, because my "beloved staff" are becoming quite skilled, and after getting back into the swing of it next summer, I'd bet I could just sit back and let it all happen around me ;-).
Reese, however, threw us for a loop, with a surprise emergency surgery episode. Born under a lucky star, though, that boy, because he's come out of it perfectly.details, HOME

It's been a long time coming, but the first log is finished! It was an event much celebrated, let me tell you. But it was indeed a short celebration, because "just over there" log #2 awaited.
You make sawdust while the sun shines, but sometimes, you need a break from the heat. We took a Saturday off to take Hatfield out to chase Chukar partridge, at Montpellier, at a local hunting club there, with a great group of upland bird hunters.details, HOME

The crane was up. It was... challenging to say the least. "Some" of the crew, not having the construction experience I have, thought it would be a quick "finished before lunch" type assembly. With some questionable-looking but still safe (I assure you ;-) tactics, though, it went up (mostly) without incident! details, HOME

The true signs of spring in the country: Turtles and deer all over the roads! It makes you smile, but also, slow down... Thieves also profited by the renewal of spring, by stealing a few tools from our site. It was a pain in the butt, but little harm came, and the tools were replaced easily. On the upside, by listening to the "everyone knows everyone else's business in the country" grapevine, I quickly found out who it was, where they lived, what they drove, and engaged in an 'information sharing' session with a local member of law enforcement. Sentencing was passed in early November, 2001... Object lesson for the perps: It rarely pays to piss me off ;-).
On the construction side, by mid June, we had finished peeling the last log... well, the last log of the first load, but that itself was an achievement! Then the construction turned to a new direction, with the assembly of the sub-floor, using the latest TJI-truss joist technology, and the welcome help of friends and family. details, HOME

Two big events marked May 2001. The foundation was poured: footings, forms, all that. It's starting to look like the house is more than just a dream, but at the same time, Josee is starting to think that it feels small... Pat Wolfe, though, my log schooling "professor", tells us that it's "quite big" actually, just to wait and see ;-).
The second big event was the first delivery of our first load of logs! With ear to ear smiles, the peeling begins! Not exactly light work, though, as backs, hands, butts, and our clothes would attest! Josee's family was golden, though, in throwing their backs and hearts into the effort, to beat the coming bug season. Denise especially was superb in her dedication, nay, fanaticism, to the task! A long commute did not disuade her from being there to the very end! details, HOME
April / avril 2001
Like a game of chess, slowly, the pieces get maneuvered into position... First to find someone to put in the foundation, and then to await their site visit and estimate. Secondly, to buy and assemble the "skyline" to maneuver the two-ton "Lincoln Log wannabees" that will form the walls of our house. Thirdly, the first load of logs awaits delivery... as soon as we have somewhere to put it.
The bad news, though, is that the owner of the little camper we are using needs it back this summer. We had gotten quite used to having it, and will regret losing it. We'll have to start looking around for another, something good, but cheap! Another bit of good news is that, upon later testing, our well water is deemed fit to drink! I knew it would be. It had sat stagnant, as it were, for months while the rental house sat empty. All it needed, I thought, was a good rinse...details, HOME

We celebrated the anniversary of our purchase of the land with a picnic at the Lookout, in the deep snow. Already, it has been a milder February and we are much anticipating the spring. It's the first time Josee has ever wished Winter to end!
Of course, the Minstry of Transport has closed the roads to heavy traffic until the ground thaws. Heavy traffic means our cement trucks for the foundation and the log transport trucks, too... The only alternative is to pay twice for log transport, so the truck can do half-loads. But we still need the cement trucks in there.

The winter is even better when you can celebrate it on your own land, we have found; snowshoeing, seeing the blanket of snow punctured with the footprints of our "tenants"... yup, much better.

On se sent comme si notre projet est au ralenti - il est évident que la construction ne peut pas avancer beaucoup en plein hiver! Tout de même, l'achat de notre première livraison de billots nous permet de sentir que les choses progressent.details, HOME
It seems our project is slowing down; there's very little you can do in the dead of winter! All the same, with the first load of logs paid for, we at least have the feeling that it's going forward anyway.details, HOME
